• Pool gate/s must self close from every position along their arc of operation including from just one centimetre away from the locking mechanism.
  • The height of the pool safety barrier is less than 1200mm because ground levels and garden beds have increased over time and have reduced the height of the pool barrier.
  • The adjoining boundary fences have climbable rails.
  • The windows opening into the pool enclosure are openable with NO more than 100mm gap.
  • There are NO climbable objects near the pool safety barrier.
  • All gates open away from the pool.
  • Latch release on gate is at least 1500mm from ground if non-glass fence.
  • When the gate is closed, it must lock securely and cannot be pulled open from fully latched position.
  • The top of each gate hinge must be 900mm apart, or the tops of gate hinges are 900mm apart or have a 60° angled cap fitted on top of the hinge.
  • There are no gaps under the fence or gate to permanent, stable ground of more than 100mm.
  • There are no climbable objects closer than 300mm on the inside of a non-glass fence.
  • All components of gate and fence are tight and secure.
  • There are no gaps in or under the fence of more than 100mm.
  • No gaps of more than 100mm open up when two vertical fence rails are squeezed together.
  • There is nothing measuring greater than 10mm in diameter and could support 25kg within 900mm on the outside of the pool fence.
  • There are no objects such as steps, pot, plants, rocks, decks etc. at ground level and within 1200mm of the highest point of the fence.
  • There are no pot plants or any other climbable objects against the fence on the inside or outside of the pool area.
  • There are no horizontal footholds on the outside of the fence greater than 10mm in width.
  • Horizontal rails on boundary/ pool fences are no closer than 900mm. (See Diagram 1)
  • There is a current CPR sign measuring at least 30cm x 30cm clearly visible from all points of the pool area.

It is your responsibility to ensure you have checked each one of the points below to help avoid the need for a re-inspection.

We do not charge for a re-inspection as long as each one of these have been checked off.

The most common pool safety problems include:

  • The gates are not self closing and self latching from to all points throughout entire arc of operation.
  • The height of the pool safety barrier is less than 1200mm because ground levels and garden beds have increased over time and have reduced the height of the pool barrier.
  • The adjoining boundary fences have climbable rails.
  • The windows opening into the pool enclosure are openable with more than 100mm gap.
  • There are climbable objects near the pool safety barrier.
